Artist Statement

Inspired by the streets of downtown Manhattan, our project embodies a revival or revitalization of classic fashion silhouettes through modern streetwear and street art influences. We envisioned two female friends on-the-go in the streets of SoHo, who have an appreciation for modern art and like to transform that into their personal style. They are not afraid of bold colors, such as primaries, and enjoy wearing geometric and obscure shapes.

Our team decided to base the location of the shoot off of the collection itself. Miara Thomas, the designer of our collection, drew inspiration from Comic Con and pop culture when creating the garments. This lead to adding geometric triangle shapes in the patches as well as cross and zigzag designs in the stitching to create a more modern, updated look in her collection. These details are what we appreciated the most in her collection because they gave us a more unique idea to work with.

As far as location, we scouted multiple pieces of colorful street art amongst the buildings in SoHo and Nolita. We felt that the graffiti art and the wall murals would resonate well with the overall idea of the geometric shapes and lines within the collection, as well as the bold Comic Con inspiration. We thought it was appropriate to style the garments in a more streetwear-inspired way, adding sneakers to some of the looks, a t-shirt under the plaid dress, etc.

The makeup we chose was also inspired by the street art, in which we tried to incorporate the paint-style look to her eye makeup. The colors were also based on the primaries and brights we chose for our vision. The hair is slicked back and away from the face because we don’t want it to be a distraction in the photo and take away from her makeup or accessories.

As far as the details involved during the actual shoot, we wanted to be unique with the model poses and the lighting/editing. We mainly focused on strong poses, featuring individual and duo shots for both models. We wanted them to channel their female power and bond with each other through their posing, but we also didn’t want the poses to look too commercial. The weather was perfect for the shoot because we were looking to incorporate a harsher light into the photos, and the sunlight worked in our favor. The editing will enhance the harsh light through added contrast and shadowing.
